Pushyamitra Shunga was the Commander-in-Chief of the Maurya armies in the last days of the Mauryas. In approximately 185 B.C. he murdered his master and founded the Sunga dynasty (185-72 B.C.), Pushyamitra’s reign was marked by a Brahminical revival as a reaction against Ashoka’s patronage of Buddhism.
