Zener Diode is a reverse biased heavily doped silicon (or germanium) p-n junction diode, which is operated in the break down region. The external resistance in the circuit and power dissipation of the diode limits the reverse current. Silicon is preferred to germanium because of its higher temperature stability and current capability.
