Question

What is Relative Lowering of Vapour Pressure?

Answer

Relative lowering of vapor pressure is a phenomenon in which the vapor pressure of a solvent is reduced when a non-volatile solute is added to it. When a non-volatile solute is added to a solvent, the vapor pressure of the solution is lower than the vapor pressure of the pure solvent at the same temperature.
Mathematically, the relative lowering of vapor pressure is given by the formula:
Relative lowering of vapor pressure = (vapor pressure of pure solvent – vapor pressure of solution) / vapor pressure of pure solvent.
